Our Story

Learn the legacy

We've learned a lot about caring for families over the years. We realize that we aren't just caring for a loved one, but the entire family. People come to us during their most difficult times, and we respond with kindness, understanding and expertise. Our goal is to make everyone feel at home as we work with them to create a memorable service in honor of a beautiful life.

Visitors stroll through a peaceful memorial park with monuments and flags on a sunny morning.

Our humble beginnings

Since Sunset Lawn Chapel of the Chime's modest beginning as Grant Memorial Lawn in 1938, we understand the significance of the role we play in helping families find peace during some of their darkest times. Our early days saw us mostly caring for young soldiers, who had been fighting in WWII. From this, we gained a deep understanding for honoring every life in a unique and special way.

Soft sunlight breaks through fog in a tranquil park, casting gentle shadows from trees at dawn.

Splendor for acres

We have grown to encompass more cemetery space than any facility in the Sacramento region. Our park provides an onsite funeral home and chapel, seven mausoleums, 11 acres for honoring cremated remains and 25 beautiful gardens. Some of these gardens are dedicated exclusively to clients with ethnic, cultural, religious or military affiliations.

Morning light casts a serene glow over the cemetery, creating a calm atmosphere among the trees.

The importance of each life

We take great pride in fulfilling the individual needs of families from the diverse communities we serve. Our mission has always been to develop a level of service that recognizes the importance of each life lived. At Sunset Lawn, we care for families when they need it the most.

2026 Standard of Care Changes and Enforcements

To Our Valued Community Members, We are reaching out to notify you of changes and stricter enforcements coming in 2026. You may have seen our signs posted around our property or our notifications on Social Media of our Standard of Care when it comes to decorating, visiting the property, gate hours and other important information. This year we would like to actively engage the community to ensure that we both care for our Cemetery as well as care for the families who have entrusted us with their loved ones. We will continue our quarterly full cemetery clean-up the second Wednesday of January, April, July, and October. This will be a time to not only clean and maintain grave, niche and crypt spaces, and gardens, but also to reset location finder pins, verify proper working of irrigation, address damage, and do regular lawn maintenance. We will be asking the community to temporarily remove decorations from their loved ones’ resting spaces, which is highly encouraged to do so, prior to our entry into the scheduled clean-up day. Should family and friends be unavailable or unable to remove decorations, we will carefully remove decorations and place them in bags and boxes with identification of the garden, mausoleum, or columbarium that they belong with noted on a tag, gathering them in our holding area near the maintenance yard. Care will be taken so as not to damage any articles placed on grave, niche, crypt spaces, and to keep all items contained and available. Staff will be available to provide direction to the holding area. Unfortunately, we will not be able to replace items on graves, niches, or crypt spaces, but we will work diligently to treat all items with care and concern to make it as easy as possible to redecorate. Starting July 1, 2026, we will be enforcing page 11 Section XI.5 from our Rules and Regulations and General Information for Owner(s) of Interment Rights of Sunset Lawn Chapel of the Chimes, Sacramento, CA. Specifically, we will be enforcing the portion of the rule that prohibits fences, glass, or the like (fencing often encroaches on neighboring graves and makes mowing difficult), as well as shells, stones, pebbles, etc. (these items become dangerous projectiles should a lawnmower inadvertently pass over them). Grave spaces may not at any time be defined or bordered by any kind of fence, railing, hedge, trench or embankment. Wire trellises shall not be placed on any grave space at any time. The placement of metal designs, ornaments, chairs, glass bottles, glass vases and similar articles on spaces shall not permitted at any time, and if so placed Sunset Lawn Chapel of the Chimes reserves the right to remove the same. It is not our intention to limit family and friends’ memorialization of loved ones’ grave spaces, but rather to bring Sunset Lawn Chapel of the Chimes back closer to the Standards of Care that allow us to properly maintain the grounds. A copy of the full Rules and Regulation Standards is available from our front desk and is with this letter. Starting immediately, we will be enforcing State of California Statute 653.1, balloon releases and decorations. These are illegal and prohibited on Sunset Lawn Chapel of the Chimes property. Balloon releases cause fire/power line hazards and enter the airspace of Sacramento International Airport, Sacramento Executive Airport, Rio Linda Airport and Mather Airforce Base, which could cause a plane crash. Balloon decorations are a nuisance and in some instances a hazard. They cause permanent color damage to markers and niche/crypt fronts. Deflated balloons are a hazard to mowers and other equipment.  *Please be aware: decorating is permissible starting the Saturday after the clean-up. This allows us three consecutive days to do the necessary work without obstacles and/or obstructions. Courtesy notices will be placed on grave, niche and crypt spaces that decorate outside our Standards of Care. Please reach out with questions or concerns and our staff will be able to assist. If you would like to be notified of future clean-ups, please submit a request with your contact information in the About Us portion of our website. Thank you for your attention to our Standard of Care Guidelines and Support as we continuously improve Sunset Lawn Chapel of the Chimes.
