Rephyla Hawkins (Grandma), age 92, passed away peacefully in her sleep at home on Wednesday, September 16, 2015.
Grandma was born on March 4, 1923, in Daytona Beach, Florida, to parents Thomas and Janie Elizabeth Simmons. Grandma later moved to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where she married her late husband Robert Hawkins Sr. After his passing, she reunited with her late daughter, Rose McCain, in Sacramento, CA where grandma became a devout member of The New Testament Baptist Church, joining in 1974.
Grandma, as a longtime member of The New Testament Baptist Church, humbly displayed her passion and dedication to the love of God, by working as the president of the senior usher board, Sunday school teacher working with children six to eight years of age and secretary of the senior choir. As part of the choir, she traveled to spread the word of God through songs of praise in traveling to places such as Africa, Jamaica, Mexico and also an independent travel back to the Holy land of Jerusalem! She was a faithful, devoted and proud child of God!
Grandma, worked over twenty years as an Assistant Instructor/Press Operator, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, over ten years with Meredith Fish Company in Sacramento, CA and over twenty years with the State of California, as an Administrative Assistant, retiring at the age of 85. Given Grandma’s enthusiasm, energy and livelihood, she returned back to work as a retire annuitant for the State of California, before finally ending her career at the age 87.
Grandma really enjoyed spending time with family, shopping, arts and crafts, bowling and most of all a huge baseball fan (Giants fan of course!)
