Hershal Lee Skidmore's Obituary
Hershal Lee Skidmore, 74, passed away on December 20, 2025, in Sacramento, California, where he was born on September 15, 1951. During his life he lived some time in Washington State and spent over 30 years in Orange County before he retired and moved back to Sacramento.
Hershal pursued his education with dedication while working full-time, earning an Associate of Arts degree in Business from American River College before completing a Bachelor of Arts in Accounting at the University of New York. His academic achievements laid the foundation for a long and successful career in accounting.
Throughout his professional life, Hershal worked in the accounting field for several utilities and municipalities. His commitment to public service culminated in his role as Finance Manager for the City of Garden Grove, from which he retired in 2013. Known for his meticulous attention to detail and steadfast work ethic, Hershal earned the respect and admiration of colleagues across the organizations he served.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Hershal was a man of deep faith who attended church throughout his life. His spiritual grounding was a constant source of strength and guidance.
Hershal had a wide range of interests that reflected both his analytical mind and active lifestyle. In high school, he played varsity basketball and later developed a passion for cross-country running and participating in 5K races. He also enjoyed working with computers—both as a hobby and as an extension of his natural affinity for numbers and systems. Cooking brought him joy as well, offering another outlet for his creativity.
At home, Hershal found fulfillment in managing household finances with the same precision he brought to his career. He took pride in budgeting and tracking expenditures—a true accountant at heart. Above all else, he cared deeply for his family and worked tirelessly to support them.
He is survived by his wife Rebecca; children, Jenifer (Steve) Hackstadt, Christopher (Dannette) Skidmore, Paul (Deva) Osborne and Jackie Osborne; Grandchildren, Evan and Erin; mother Lois Skidmore; half-brother Curtis (Wanda) Skidmore; and half-sister Cari Lynn (Jeff) Beaver and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Oscar Skidmore; and half-brothers Cary Skidmore and Carl Skidmore.
Hershal will be remembered fondly by those who knew him—for his unwavering dedication to family and work, his quiet strength, and the kindness he extended throughout his life. May his memory bring comfort to all who mourn his passing.
A Memorial Service will be held on January 23, 2026, 12:00 PM, at Sunset Lawn Chapel of the Chimes 4701 Marysville Blvd., Sacramento CA. Service and graveside followed by reception. A second Memorial Service will be held in Orange County on February 28, 2026, 11:00 AM, at Lighthouse Presbyterian Church 7702 Westminster Blvd., Westminster CA. Service followed by luncheon. There will also be a family gathering in Yakima Washington on January 31, 2026.
