Fred Henry Sloan's Obituary
On Thursday, March 4, 2021, Fred Henry Sloan, loving husband of Doris, beloved father of four and member of the Greatest Generation, passed away in Sacramento, at age 95. Fred was born on September 19, 1925 in Sacramento, California to Fred Howard Sloan (native Sacramentan) and Martha Robinson. Fred was raised in Del Paso Heights in the County of Sacramento, where he graduated from Grant Union High School in 1942. Upon a mid-term graduation, Fred eagerly demonstrated his love of Country by immediately enlisting in the United Stated Navy. He honorably served four years as a hydraulic mechanic and aviation machinist from 1942 to 1946. He was a proud original crew member of the USS Shangri-La. A few years after returning home from World War II, Fred was the manager of and ultimately was able to purchase his own gas station called the Flying A/Tidewater Oil Co. located on Freeport Boulevard in Sacramento.
On January 15, 1949, Fred married his wife Doris May Jones. Fred and Doris purchased their first home located on Larry Way in North Highlands, California in 1953, where they raised their three sons, Robert, Richard and Randy, and daughter, Carol.
Fred served as a mail carrier for the U.S. Post Office in his hometown of North Highlands, California from 1958-1984. Fred made his mark in North Highlands as a community leader through his active involvement with Campos Verde PTA Executive Board, Coach, Manager, Player Agent, Umpire, Vice President, President of Larchmont Little League, District 6 Little League Umpires Association, Co-Coordinator of the Cub Scout Program, Cub Master of Cub Scout Pack #445, Del Paso Boy Scouts of America (he was awarded the “Silver Bear” by the Golden Bear Council, Chairman of The North Highlands Recreation and Park District, and North Highlands Lions Club. In 1964, Fred was honored by the local Chamber of Commerce with the Citizen of The Year Award for the North Highlands Community. Fred also had a street named after him, Sloan Drive in North Highlands.
Some of Fred’s most proud moments included his service as Chairman of the North Highlands Recreation and Parks District through which he successfully accomplished the planning and completion of the community pool at Campos Verde Jr. High School and the construction of the baseball diamonds at Brock Park.
After retiring from the post office in 1984, Fred helped his son, Rick, start a handyman business called Rick’s Home Maintenance. Fred worked with his son at the business for 12 years. After that, Fred finally retired and enjoyed life with his wife Doris and family. Fred’s retirement years included his daily rides on his exercise bike and his daily favorite Grey Goose dirty martini. Fred also enjoyed attending Highlands High School Alumni gatherings at Lou’s Burgers where his knowledge of North Highlands history and his uncanny ability to recall names and addresses of alumni and their families from years past was impressive.
Fred is survived by his beloved wife of 72 years, Doris, his four children, Robert (Marsha), Richard (Brenda), Randy (Millicent), and Carol (Marc) Marcus, five grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and three nieces: Fran, Karen and Nancy.
Fred: You will always be in our hearts! Your family and all that knew you will miss you very much!
Due to pandemic restrictions, a private service will be held at Sunset Lawn Chapel of the Chines on March 24th at 10 am; internment with Military Honors will immediately follow the private service and will be open to those who wish to say goodbye.
