Vernon Lee Dorris' Obituary
Vernon Lee Dorris, age 96, of Cassville, Missouri, passed away on Thursday, October 29, 2020, at Mercy Hospital in Rogers, Arkansas. Mr. Dorris, son of William and Gertrude (Olds) Dorris, was born on August 26, 1924, in Hartville, Missouri. He served his country proudly in the United States Coast Guard during World War II from 1943 to 1946 with most of his service time on the USS General William Mitchell ship. Vernon worked various jobs throughout his life which included working in plywood and paper mills in Washington state while raising his family, and then when they moved to Indiana in 1966, he worked in dry wall. Out of all his past occupations, Vernon loved farming the most; he loved working with cattle and combining the harvest in the fall.
Vernon was a Pentecostal Minister for over fifty years and loved to play his guitar and sing gospel music. In retirement, he lived in Arizona, California, before settling in Cassville in 2012. Vernon was an amazing man who loved God, his family, and enjoyed helping others. He touched many lives, was loved by so many, and will be greatly missed.
On July 9, 1946, he was united in marriage to Annie Laray Pickett in Prosser, Washington; she preceded him in death on April 22, 2004. He then was united in marriage to Gloria DeWoody in January 2005; she preceded him in death in January 2006.
On January 27, 2007, he was united in marriage to Delores Weldon; she survives.
Additional survivors one daughter, Sharon Northcutt and her husband Tom, of Cassville; four brothers, Ronald Dorris, Klamath Falls, Oregon, Larry Dorris and his wife Kandie, of Anderson, California, Richard Dorris and his wife Kwi Ye, of San Leandro, California, and Steve Dorris, of Exeter; 15 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; five step-children, Rick Weldon, Barbara Gibson, Jeanne Haynes, Diane Weldon, and Keith Weldon; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and first two wives, Vernon is preceded in death by five brothers, Charlie, Jim, Noah, Gordon, and Arethel; and four sisters, Eva, Ruth, Rosie, and Marie.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, November 5, 2020, at the White Funeral Home and Crematory, Cassville, with Evangelist John Hile officiating.
Burial will follow at the Sunset Lawn Chapel of the Chimes, 4701 Marysville Boulevard, Sacramento, CA 95838 in Sacramento, California on Thursday, November 12, 2020 at 10:00 AM.
