Verna Floy Hedrick's Obituary
Good night, Mama …
Born, November, 6, 1923 in Burrel, California to Ruby F. Howard Fraga and Frank M. Fraga.
Died February 17, 2015 in Sacramento, California. She met her husband Robert Wiseman Hedrick while attending Caruthers High School, later Graduating from Fresno School of Technology and married our father in Las Vegas on February 15, 1942 with two of their dearest friends, Bud and Jesse Gandy in attendance.
She raised her children without her husband much of the time as he was in the Air Force and often times far from home. She was a homemaker among homemakers. What this wonderful woman could do with one pound of hamburger would amaze most. In her later years she and our dad volunteered with Senior Gleaners, made tons of friends and found great pleasure helping provide goods and food to those who has less than they.
Mama was a stickler when it came to the English language and grammar usage. She loved to work crossword puzzles on a daily basis and even into her late eighties could complete the Sunday New York Times addition. More than one staff person at College Oak Nursing and Rehabilitation, where she spent her last months of her life asked me, “Was your mom a school teacher?”
Mom loved to play poker and was pretty good at it. She played everything from Five Card Draw to Seven Card Low Ball, roll your own. Her favorite was a game called ThreeToed Peet. Of course the best part of playing cards was that she was with the people she loved most in the world besides her own family. Frances and Bud, Margie and Marvin, Pat and Chuck, Marge and Ray, Bud and Jesse, Bob and Jean and Alva and Jesse.
Preceded in death by her loving husband of 52 years; Robert W. Hedrick; her father, Frank Fraga, mother Ruby Howard Fraga, sister, Shirley Fraga Burgess, stepmother, Emma Fries Fraga, stepbrother, Jerry Fries, sister, Marjorie Jean Fraga Koontz and her brother, William Morris Fraga. Survived by her loving sister, Frances Fraga Parks (Bud). Also survived by her three loving children; Kathy Hedrick Casper (Richard), and sons, Robert Jeffrey Hedrick, (Toni), the mothers of his children, Brenda Hogan and Karen Flowers, Scott Michael Hedrick (Lorri). Seven grandchildren; Richard Casper Jr. (Courtney), Sarah Casper Gillispie (Casey), Jeffrey Rex Hedrick (Angela), Robert Jeffrey Hedrick (MariAlice), Matthew Scott Hedrick (Marlen), Kimberly Hedrick and Kelsey Hedrick and ten great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. We want to thank, above all, the wonderful and caring staff at College Oak Nursing and Rehab who took care and supported Mom and the family until the very end.
Family and friends are welcome at the celebration of her life held in mid summer, July 19, 2015 at North Highlands VFW Post 4647 at 2:00PM.
3300 U. Street, North Highlands, California
