Velma Jean Hervey, a cherished mother, educator, and beacon of kindness, passed away on April 8, 2024, surrounded by her loving children in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Born on September 29, 1937, in Texarkana, Texas, Velma was the daughter of Rosie and Edward Hervey. She was one of six siblings—Willie, Mattie, Luther, Thelma, and Annie. Demonstrating remarkable determination and academic prowess, Velma became one of the first in her family to graduate from university.
She attended Prairie View A&M University, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Education, a significant accomplishment during that era.
Velma’s life was a testament to the virtues of unconditional love, resilience, and generosity. Her spirit of giving shone brightly in her dedication to her children, Victure, Edward, and Sadre; her son-in law Gregory, granddaughter, Imani; her nieces, Jackie, Mae, Dayan, Skylar and Brooke; and nephews, Marshall, Bruce, Tyree, Julian, Lathan and Alexander.
She was also deeply connected with her surviving sisters, Mattie and her identical twin, Thelma.
Known for her private and contemplative nature, Velma also possessed a sharp wit and a gentle sense of humor. Her independence and fearlessness were matched by a profound sensitivity and compassion that endeared her to all. An avid tennis fan, Velma also enjoyed knitting and cooking, and cherished her vacation time, which she often spent with family.
Velma’s warm smile and radiant presence left an indelible mark on everyone she met. She deeply cared for her family, displaying a passion and kindness that were truly inspiring. Velma Jean Hervey’s legacy of love and strength will continue to influence and resonate with those who knew her, and she will be dearly missed.
