45 years ago, St John ("Sengen") was the saxophonist band leader of The Sophomores in Madras, India. My brother Hugh was a close friend. While playing cricket in intense heat, my brother collapsed from unknown causes, and Sengen immediately drove his lifeless body to a nearby hospital, where Hugh was pronounced dead. A couple of years after that awful event, Sengen and his adoring wife Irene welcomed Greg Haubrich, a visiting U.S. musician, into their lives and their home with what Greg now recounts as "a delicious meal, and the first people in India who truly made me feel welcome"…Greg played with Sengen at an amazing club in the Taj Hotel in Madras for a few weeks, and the two men developed a mutual admiration of each other's musical talents. Irene, this is for you. Your absolute devotion to Sengen and the depth of his love for you endured over 50 years. What a gift! May the indescribable love and affection you felt for the love of your life carry you through this most difficult time. I am sending you virtual hugs and recalling the times we all shared in our humble beginnings so far away. My love and respects to your son Mark and your grandchildren. Words are inadequate now – may Sengen's love and impact in your life live on through his music and joyful memories. With respect and love,Betty (Broughton) Haubrich
