Obituary for Shirley Grimes
May 11, 1939 – March 20, 2026
Shirley Grimes passed away on March 20, 2026, at the age of 86, leaving behind a legacy of determination, strength, and deep love for her family.
She was born on May 11, 1939, in Frederick, Maryland, on Mother’s Day—a meaningful beginning for a woman who would devote her life to caring for others. Shirley was the daughter of Nevin Jackson and Bessie Jackson (née Baker) and grew up as one of eight siblings: Dolores Whipp, Francis Watcer, Martha Long, Junie Jackson, Tootsie, Roland Jackson, and Roy Jackson. Family was always at the center of her life, and those early bonds shaped her strong sense of loyalty and resilience.
Shirley married her high school sweetheart, Richard Grimes, beginning a partnership rooted in commitment and devotion. As a military wife for 16 years, she supported her family through the challenges and frequent changes of military life with grace and resolve. Together, they raised six children: Sharon Rubison, Susan Grimes, Donna, Cindy Grimes, Richard Grimes, and Randy Grimes—each of whom carries forward her strength and determination.
In 1977, Shirley made a bold move to California with four of her children, embracing change and opportunity with courage. Never one to shy away from hard work or personal growth, she completed her education in 1980 at the inspiring age of 40, proving that determination has no timeline.
Shirley devoted 20 years of service as a custodian with the United States Postal Service, where her strong work ethic and reliability were evident every day. She was known for being headstrong, tenacious, and unwavering—once Shirley set her mind to something, there was nothing anyone could say to convince her it could not be done. Yet alongside her strength was a deeply loving heart, one that gave fiercely and protected those she cared about.
She leaves behind a legacy of hundreds of direct descendants, including 86 great-grandkids.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her sisters Martha Long and Tootsie, her brothers Junie Jackson, Roland Jackson, and Roy Jackson.
Shirley Grimes will be remembered as a woman who faced life head‑on, believed in herself without hesitation, and loved her family without limits. Her memory will live on through the many lives she touched and the example she set—one of perseverance, courage, and unconditional love.
