Patricia Ann Barkley's Obituary
Patricia Ann Barkley (Patty Ann), passed away unexpectedly on January 18, 2025, at the age of 78. Her family is deeply saddened by her sudden loss.
Born on November 3, 1946, in Waxahachie, Texas, Patricia was the daughter of the late Robert and Mae Barkley of Metairie, Louisiana. She spent her early years in Baton Rouge and New Orleans before earning a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism from Louisiana State University. After college, she moved to the San Francisco Bay Area, where she built a life and career in technical writing and communications while raising her son.
Patricia is lovingly remembered by her son Shammas Jed Brown and daughter-in-law Mari Larangeira. Affectionately known as “Nana,” she was cherished by her grandchildren, Rowan and Isabele “Izzy.” She is also survived by her brothers Robert Barkley Jr. (Diana), and William Barkley, as well as her nieces and nephews - Williams Barkley Jr. (Olya), Robert Barkley III (Stacy), Richard Barkley, Samantha Barkley Woods (Terry), Matthew Barkley (Becky), Ashley Barkley Grossman (Louis), Jennifer Barkley Youngberg (Matthew) and Victoria Barkley - whom she followed with pride. She is also survived by Sara Barkley Landrieu (mother of Ashley, Jennifer and Victoria). Patricia is preceded in death by her sister-in-law, Maria "Milly" Barkley.
A passionate volunteer, Patricia served as a writing coach at Albany High School in Albany, California, and was an active member of an International choir, which included a cultural exchange trip to Cuba in 2001. She loved singing, reading, bird-watching, and listening to the radio. Following the passing of her parents in the early 2000s, she became a hospice volunteer with Sutter Health, providing comfort and care to individuals and families at the end of life.
In 2019, Patricia relocated to Sacramento, where she found a welcoming community in a senior living residence. She formed meaningful connections there and embraced this new chapter of life.
Patricia's warmth, kindness, and unwavering love for her family and community will be deeply missed.
