Katie Mae Caesar was born on October 24, 1927 in Farmerville, Louisiana to parents Prentis Carter and Louise (Ewing) Carter. She spent her childhood years in Farmerville before moving with her family to Richmond, California in the early 1940’s. Katie would later relocate to Foresthill, California in 1948. It was here that she met Alfred (Jack) Caesar, a lumbar mill worker. Alfred and Katie were married on June 20, 1948. The growing Caesar family would live in Foresthill until their decision to move to Sacramento , California in1955.
Katie’s life in Sacramento provided her with many opportunities to display her many talents as a mother and a contributing member of her community. In earlier years she was well know in the Del Paso Heights community as a skilled hair stylist for African-American women. She was an active parent in her children’s schools, and served as a Den Mother for a local Cub Scout troop. She also served as a scorekeeper of numerous baseball games for the Grant Little League. Katie’s employment history during these years would find her working late night hours in local canneries or waitressing in local restaurants in Del Paso Heights. She would eventually find work as a Nurse’s Aide at Mercy San Juan Hospital in 1966. Katie’s warm heart and her outgoing personality attracted many people to her who would become her lifelong friends. She was an avid player of card games such as pinochle and bid whist, and enjoyed a well-played games of dominoes with family and friends. She was also actively involved with local community groups and organizations that provided her with additional opportunities to socialize with family and friends alike.
One of Katie’s greatest and most relaxing pleasures was fishing in local streams, rivers, ponds and lakes. She was a good fisherman and was proficient with a fishing pole or a rod and reel. She rarely came home without catches that may have included perch, crappie, black bass, blue gill or catfish. These catches invariably would find their way to her skillet or oven as lunch or dinner meals for the Caesar household or visiting friends and relatives.
