John Lee Caraway, 92, passed away peacefully on February 23, 2026, in Bloomington, Indiana. He was born on August 15,1933 in Albany, New York to the late Nelson and Lela Mae Caraway. John lived a life marked by dedication to his family, faith, and service to his country.
John graduated from Albany High School in New York in June 1952. Shortly thereafter, he answered the call to serve his nation during the Korean War as a member of the US Army (1952-1955). Following his time, John continued his military career with the US Air Force (1955-1973) where he served with distinction until his retirement as a Master Sergeant. His commitment to service extended beyond the military; he worked as a Civil Service Radio Technician at McClellan AFB (1973-1993), North Highlands, CA and retired from there as well.
A man of deep faith, John was a devoted Christian who found spiritual fulfillment as a longtime member and took pride in stewardship of First Baptist Church in North Highlands. His unwavering belief and dedication to his church community was central to his life. He also enjoyed attending City Church for all Nations when he was in Indiana.
John was an active individual who embraced physical fitness and sports throughout his years. He enjoyed working out in the gym and was an avid runner. Bowling was another one of his passions. He competed in several different leagues and tournaments over the years. Additionally, he found great joy in watching Western movies and attending WNBA and Women’s College basketball games.
Family was at the heart of John's life. John was a brother to Joe Caraway, William Carraway, and Marjorie Robinson, and he preceded in death by his siblings, Eleanor M. Johnson, James C. Caraway, Edward Carraway, Delila Carraway, and Mildred Caraway. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
John shared a loving marriage with Himeko for 44 years before she passed. Together they raised their daughter Nancy (Melvin Boatner) who brought immense pride and joy into their lives. Nancy blessed John and Himeko with three grandsons, Kelvin (Jessica), Terrence, and Julian (Ciara) and four great grandchildren: Maiya, Kaycen, Lola, and Remi.
His legacy will live on through his daughter, grandsons, and great grandchildren; as well as countless others whose lives he touched through his kindness and steadfast spirit.
May John’s memory bring comfort to all who knew him. His life of service, faithfulness and love will remain an enduring inspiration to those he leaves behind.
