Hiram Robert Jones' Obituary
Hiram Robert “Bob” Jones was born in Kansas City, Missouri on April 28, 1926. After 86 years of vigorous life, attend by his loving wife of 64 years, he went to his rest with The Lord on July 14, 2012 in Carmichael, CA.Bob was preceded into his rest by his parents Harry and Pamela Jones, his brothers Walter and Lacy, and his sister Francis. He is survived by his wife Dorothy, his children Glenn, David, Roberta(Merrill), Nancy(Collins), Jack, Michael and Mary (Randsell) all of whom helped provide loving care and comfort for Bob during his last days.As a young man, Bob saw combat in WWII in Europe in the US 8th Army from 1944-1945. Upon returning home to Southern California, he met and married Dorothy Colt in 1948. Bob became a journeyman electrician, working in Southern California until 1958, when the family relocated to Sacramento. Bob went to work for the City of Sacramento as an electrician in 1966, where he worked until his retirement in 1991. At his passing, the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 340 acknowledged his 69 years of continuous union membership.Bob had a great love of the outdoors. He enjoyed fishing and taking his children on summer camping trips. Some of his favorite campgrounds were along highway 88 in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, although there were many others.Bob served as a Trustee for the Free Methodist Church of Sacramento, where he taught Sunday Bible Study for many years. After retiring he wrote and self-published two novels and two memoirs recounting his childhood in the Southwest during the depression and his experiences during WWII in the US Army.After losing his sight to glaucoma in the late 1990’s, he became a volunteer and mentor with the Sacramento Society for the Blind and went on to train and mentor many sight-impaired seniors. His Compassionate service to the Society touched many lives and helped define his later years.Bob is survived by over 20 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and countless more who called him “Daddy Bob” at some time during their lives. He leaves a legacy of compassion and patience to everyone he encountered.Bob will be interred during a private ceremony at Sunset Lawn Chapel of the Chimes, 4701 Marysville Blvd, Sacramento, CA. A Memorial Service and Informal reception for family and friends will be held, Saturday, August 4, 2012 at 11:00 am at First Baptist Church of Fair Oaks, 4401 San Juan Ave, Fair Oaks, CA.In lieu of flowers the family requests donations are made to the Sacramento Society for the Blind, 1238 S Street, Sacramento, CA 95811 www.societyfortheblind.org
