Herminio Sanchez Untalan's Obituary
Herminio Sanchez Untalan, a proud veteran of the United States Air Force, passed away on Monday, July 25, 2022 in Sacramento, CA.
The son of Eugenia Garcia Sanchez Untalan and Ret. Major Pedro D. Untalan (US Army), Hermie grew up in Dolores, San Fernando, Pampanga, Philippines. He was born on June 11, 1939, the fourth son of 10 children (9 sons, 1 daughter).
At the age of 19, Hermie enlisted in the US Air Force. He valued this service highly and attained the rank of Master Sergeant. As part of this service, Hermie distinguished himself by meritorious service while assigned to the Accounting and Finance Branch, Sheppard Air Force Base, Texas. During this period, MSgt. Untalan's professional knowledge and devotion to duty resulted in the development of a quality assurance program that helped make the Sheppard Military Pay Section one of the top ten offices in the Air Force.
MSgt. Untalan’s tour of duty for 22 years included: George AFB in Victorville, CA; Hamilton AFB in Novato, CA; Vandenberg AFB in CA; Andersen AFB in Guam; and Clark AFB in the Philippines, among other locations around the world.
MSgt. Untalan’s career began in the Vietnam era. His medals and honors include: AF Good Conduct Medal with four Oak Leaf Clusters, Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon, NCO Professional Military Education Ribbon, AF Longevity Service Award with four Oak Leaf Clusters, Vietnam Service Medal with two Bronze Service Stars, Army Good Conduct Medal, AF Outstanding Unit Award, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, and AF Commendation Medal.
MSgt. Untalan retired from the Air Force in 1981, but continued to dedicate himself in service to his country as a civil servant, a lifelong career spanning 44 years.
Herminio Sanchez Untalan is survived by wife, Anastasia Vargas Paras Untalan; daughter, June Marie Paras Untalan Sulivan and son-in-law, Jorge Omega Sulivan; grandsons, Isaiah Ernest Sulivan and Elijah Ray Sulivan; and granddaughter, Alanis Grace Sulivan; brother, Reynaldo Sanchez Untalan; sister, Adoracion Sanchez Untalan Blanchard; and dozens of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews; and two great-great nieces. His loved ones will remember his storytelling full of random details; love of good food and spirits; skillful playing of the guitar, ukulele, and harmonica; and passion for boxing, baseball, Elvis, and hits of the 1950's and 1960's. Hermie loved his family legacy and took pride in honoring the values of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
