In Loving Memory
George Thomas Coleman was born to the late Richard and Emma Coleman in Paulsboro, New Jersey, on November 25, 1930. George is also survived by two of his older sisters, Elise Cooper, 99, and Flora McCormick, who will turn 102, in October 2024. He received his education from the Paulsboro School System. He played football. He joined the Air Force as an Inventory Management Supervisor during the Vietnam War. George was united with the love of his life, his wife, Marie Coleman, in April 1960, 49 years, with whom he built a remarkable life. He was a dedicated husband and made every effort to ensure the happiness of his family. He LOVED him some Marie Coleman and was by her side until her death. He was a silent and observant man who understood boundaries but would step in and share his opinion when needed.
They had five children: Bruce Johnson (wife Dee Johnson, children George Johnson II, Khia Johnson, Yvonne Johnson), Pam Hamilton (husband Jeffery Hamilton (children Danyelle Hamilton, Denita Hamilton, and Jeffery Hamilton Jr., Kenneth Rhone, (children, Tiana Rhone, Naomi Rhone, Shane Rhone, Nakayla Rhone), Emma Coleman Alexander (husband Bishop Trevor D. Alexander, daughters Tara Alexander, Tasha Alexander, Tonya Alexander-Arredondo, and Pheonix Arredondo, grandson-son-in-love) and Monique Coleman (husband Mike Smith, children Darnel Borden and Marie Smith) and a host of great-grandchildren.
George served honorably in the US Air Force and retired after 20-plus years of service. He served his nation wherever he was sent, in places like San Antonio, Texas, Japan, and Sacramento, California. George bid farewell to the Air Force and embarked on a new chapter of his life. He enjoyed his rewarding career at Cambell Soup.
He belonged to Solid Rock Missionary Baptist Church, where he was a faithful Deacon/Trustee. George was known as “The Candy Man” in the church. The church merged with Greater Hill Zion Missionary Baptist Church.
George enjoyed watching football. He was a Philadelphia Eagles fan and enjoyed a good football game. George also enjoyed watching other sports, such as fishing, westerns, and cooking channels.
He was an excellent bargain shopper because he knew the people at their establishments and got the best deals on items. George was a man of little words but the BIGGEST heart. He always blessed the sanitation workers at Christmas with something special. He taught his family how to be kind and tip well. George loved fishing on the creek bank.
We want to honor and salute Monique for being his primary caregiver and did a phenomenal job caring for him. Mo, as she is affectionately referred to, made every effort to make sure that daddy was comfortable, and also became his translator because he didn’t like to wear his hearing aid. We cannot forget Marie, his granddaughter and Darnell his grandson, who also helped to ensure grandpa was relaxed and content.
Deacon George Coleman leaves a legacy that will live on in the hearts. George Coleman was a beloved husband, dad, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. He celebrated his 93rd birthday in November of 2023. He departed this life on July 8th 2024.
