Earl Walter Haynie Jr's Obituary
In Loving Memory of Earl Walter Haynie Jr.
On June 8, 2023, Earl Walter Haynie Jr., a beacon of wisdom, humor, and kindness, left us peacefully to join the celestial dance. Born on September 19, 1937, Earl graced this world for an impressive 85 years. His indomitable spirit and love of life were contagious, and his radiant smile had the power to light up even the darkest of rooms.
Earl was an avid fan of country and rock 'n' roll music, and his love of dancing was second to none. When he wasn't dancing, he could often be found immersed in the world of John Wayne and western movies, enjoying nature shows, or getting lost in the intriguing plots of science fiction movies. He could solve any problem that came his way, earning him the affectionate title of "McGyver".
Earl was deeply involved in his community. He volunteered with the Yolo County Willow Oak Fire Department for 19 years, always ready to lend a hand or a tool to those in need. His support extended to his neighbors, where he used his remarkable green thumb to help with gardening and his extensive knowledge of mechanics to help with car repairs. His favorite pastime was watching his beloved San Francisco 49ers play football and rooting for any team that featured Tom Brady.
Earl's dedication and love for the earth was evident in his lifelong career as a farmer and farm equipment mechanic in Woodland, CA. He cherished the process of tending and watching things grow, a testament to his immense patience and care. Always one to have fun, he often joked that he colored his thumb with lemon‐lime Kool‐Aid powder just to prove that he really did have a green thumb!
His early life was marked by remarkable accomplishments. As a member of the Future Farmers of America, he won first prize at the Yolo County Fair, impressing judges and spectators alike by parading a very large bull he'd just met. His rapport with the bull was so strong that the bull walked with its head on Earl's shoulder, shocking even the bull's owner.
In 1957, Earl was honored as the "Most Valuable Lineman" at Esparto High School for his outstanding performance in football. Later, while serving in the Army in Germany in 1961, Earl had a memorable encounter with a 4‐star general. The General, who had gotten lost during war games, had Earl tie him to a tree for not having the proper papers. This act of obedience earned him a commendation from the General himself.
Earl spent his final days at home in West Sacramento with Liz, his beloved wife of 46 years, by his side. He is lovingly remembered by his wife Liz, his daughter Lora Steffen of Vail, AZ, and a host of adoring grandchildren and great‐grandchildren. His absence leaves a void in our hearts, but his legacy continues to inspire and remind us of the beauty of kindness, humor, and wisdom.
Earl, your radiant smile, boundless wisdom, and endless kindness will continue to light up our lives. You planted the seeds of love and joy in our hearts, and we promise to nurture them as you would. Dance on, dear Earl, and keep the music alive in the heavens.
