Bernell Hurst was born in San Francisco, California, on Oct 20, 1951. He was the 8th child of his parents, Willie Joseph Hurst and Catherine Hurst Jenkins who preceded him in death. His other family member’s brother and sisters preceded him in death are: Dolores Joyce Hurst Nolan, Narcissus Marie Hurst Reynolds, Josie Marie Hurst Johnson, Catherine Elaine Hurst, and his older brother, Willie Joseph Hurst Jr. He leaves two sisters to cherish his memory, Elaine Beverly Hurst Green of Elk Grove, California and Jewell Johanna Hurst Cary of Alpharetta, Georgia.
He grew up loving baseball and was an avid pitcher. He played baseball for the San Francisco Presidio Junior League. He was pitching at 95 miles per hour. At age 18, the coach told his mom that he could possibly get a tryout with the San Francisco Giants Minor League. Sometime later, an illness hit Bernell where he later feared the fast pitch balls. Sometimes you wonder what could have been.
Bernell later became a Merchant Marine in San Francisco and sailed the seas. His favorite old school groups were the Spinners, O’Jays, and Phyllis Hyman and he loved Anita Baker. He would listen to his music all day long.
One of his best traits was to eat good food, and he loved his barbecue and fried chicken, and his sister’s Elaine potato salad.
He was a quiet person never wanting to cause problems. During the process of his illness, Bernell always told his family members Thank You for taking care of me.
Bernell will be missed by his family who loved him so much.
