Legacy of Alvin Haynes
July 21, 1938 – October 27, 2013
Alvin was born to the late Spragen and Dora Haynes on July 21, 1939 in Doloroso, Mississippi . He passed peacefully on October 27, 2013 with his wife and sister by his side. He was the fourth child of six.
Alvin accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at the Free Spring Missionary Baptist Church in Doloroso, Mississippi. After moving to California he was a member of New Testament Baptist Church where he sang with the Male Chorus and Choir #1. Later he united with the Faith Fellowship Community Church where he served faithfully until his illness prevented him from attending. At Faith Fellowship, he sang with the Male Chorus and also served as a member on the Board of Trustees. Alvin was dedicated to his church.
In 1959, Alvin graduated from Johnson High School in Woodville, Mississippi. In high school he excelled in Algebra. His knowledge of the subject was such that his teacher often appointed him as his substitute to teach his classes in his absence. He attended Alcorn A&M College in Lorman, Missisissipi and graduated with a BA degree in Masonry. In college he was a member of the Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity.
After relocating to California Alvin worked as a Mason doing odd jobs, but being unable to get the necessary sponsorship to get into the union he went to work for the United States Postal Services. He worked there for 34 years, until he was stricken with a stroke that left him paralyzed in 2001.
He met Peggy Jean Hunt in college and after she too relocated to California, they were married on June 11, 1966. To this union one son was born, Marvin Lehann Haynes.
Alvin loved to fish and cook, and was dedicated to his family. He worked extensively to ensure that all of his family needs were met.
Alvin was preceded in death by his father and mother and one brother, Leroy Haynes.
He leaves to cherish his memory: his loving wife of 47 years Peggy Jean Haynes; one son, Marvin Lehann Haynes, two brothers, Franklin D. Scott, of Sacramento, CA and Sidney L. Haynes of Mississippi; two sisters, Lue Bertha Barnes of Chicago, IL, and Mary (Mae) Cooper of Sacramento, CA; three brother in laws, Charles (Patricia) and Houston Hunt of Mississippi and Robert Hunt of Alexandria, VA; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
