Mercedes B. Rodriguez

Birth Date: November 9, 1937
Death Date: July 20, 2016

Mercedes Bautista Rodriguez became our angel on July 20th, 2016. She is survived by her loving husband Raymundo Rodriguez, her two children Ramer and Marlou Rodriguez, her two beautiful daughters-in-law Rose and Jennie and her five grandchildren, Jolie, James, Logan, Kona and O’Neill.
On November 9th, 1937, Bernardina and Valeriano Bautista gave birth to Mercedes Bautista in a small town named Badoc in Illocos Norte, Philippines. She lost both of her parents during World War 2 and was raised by Saferina Batara. She met her future husband in a bus station in 1963. Four months later she married Raymundo Rodriguez on January 9th, 1964. Mercedes had 2 children with Raymundo before relocating to Nigeria Africa in 1973. After her tenure in Nigeria, she moved with her family to Salinas, California in 1983. In 2003 she retired and relocated to Sacramento, California to be near her grandchildren.

Mercedes was an educator. She loved sharing her knowledge of math to young bright minds. She got her degree in Chemical Engineering from National University in Sampaloc Manila. She started her career as a math teacher at Marynoll Father’s High School in Pakil, Laguna, Philippines. She then found an opportunity to teach at Teachers Women’s College in a small village named Bodinga, south of Sokoto Nigeria, Africa. She worked as a math teacher for several years and became a Vice Principal for one year. She did not like the administrator role and went back to teaching. When her teaching contract was completed in 1983, she decided to move to Salinas California. Although she was an excellent educator, higher qualifications of being a teacher in the United States prevented her from being a teacher. She worked odd jobs including sewing refurbished mattresses. But her love for teaching was still in her heart. After several failed attempts to be a certified teacher, she decided the best thing for her was to become an Instructional Aid. She worked at North Salinas High School from 1992 to 2003. The love of teaching and helping future minds was her passion.
Mercedes had a love for gardening. In her home, she has a garden that produces fresh vegetables that can fill a grocery store. She also loved sharing the vegetables she grew. When friends and family visited, she often offered to have them go through her garden to pick ripened vegetables.
Mercedes was also an amazing seamstress. She loved to sew clothes. This was a skill she acquired as a young girl. She would make her granddaughter’s Halloween costumes and sewed numerous skirts and dresses for her daughter-in-law. Being resourceful, she would sew her family’s torn clothing, including undergarments.
