Dolores Jean Evans was born July 24, 1930 in Marshfield, Missouri to Mary and Ben Nell. She grew up in Springfield with her sister Pearl and two brothers, Wilbert and Jerry and later had many half-siblings after her parents diverced. Her life in Springfield was a hard one; in order to get water they had to sign up for a turn to use the town well which they only got to use once a week. They had no toilets and the children had to drop out of school after the eighth grade.
In order to make money her family would travel to California following the crops and working in the orchards. It was on one of these orchards in Lodi that my great grandmother her future husband James Evans. Over time my great grandfather James became a friend of Dolores’s family because he would give them a ride home after their car broke down which it did almost everyday. The eventually asked him if he wanted to move into their house which came with their step-fathers job. He said yes because he had been sleeping in his car parked in a barn.
After time on the orchards past James and Dolores decided to get married. With a suit borrowed from his soon to be father in lawn and a new dress for her; They were wed in a nearby courthouse
and soon after she was expecting my grandpa Jim.
Times got rough after they were married; a ceaseless rain started to fall that stopped anyone from being able to farm.
