Arnold Reinholdt Blumhardt

Birth Date: June 14, 1920
Death Date: November 27, 2015

Arnie was born in Hosmer, South Dakota to Reinhold Carl Blumhardt and Christina Kubier. His mother remarried John Kulm and he was the older brother to Mae, Florence, Tom, Bob, Frank and Kenny. All of his siblings preceded him in death. After graduation from 8th grade and a desire to see more than the family farm, he joined FDR’s Civilian Conservation Corps where in the Black Hills he joked of planting a “million” trees. Adventure called again, and he embraced the hobo lifestyle in 1939 and 1940. Hopping freight trains heading west to California, he found odd jobs chopping wood and picking peaches. He served honorably in the Army Air Corps, from1941 to 1945, as a radio mechanic. In 1944 he married his sweetheart and life partner of 71 years, Betty Jo, in Sacramento. After the war he earned his GED, trained as a stone mason and was sought out for his non-smoking fireplaces. A job at McClellan Air Force Base as an electronics radar technician brought them to North Highlands where they lived in their home until recently and raised 4 children. Arnie continued his career with the Federal Aviation Administration and retired from the Oakland Airport as an electronics radar technician supervisor in 1976. Returning to North Highlands, they lived a full life and traveled many times across the US, to Europe and South America. He was a jack of all trades and his hobbies and talents were many including gardening, woodworking, upholstery, auto mechanics, plumbing, electrical, golf and many more. He excelled at it all. He loved to tell stories and was a member of Toastmasters. He was also a member and served with the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), National Association of Retired Federal Employees (NARFE), Sons in Retirement (SIR) and Advent Lutheran Church in Citrus Heights. Arnie is survived by his wife Betty Jo, son Arnold II, daughters Tricia (Doug), Eileen (Wayne) and Lynette (Dave), grandchildren Robbie, Millie, Erica, Trevor, Matthew (deceased), Andy, Will, Kyle, great grand-children Erica, Mercedes, great great grandchildren Veronica and Zachary. He was a beloved husband and Dad and all around great guy. He loved and was loved. We’ll miss him dearly. A memorial service will be held at Advent Lutheran Church, 5901 San Juan Avenue, Citrus Heights, CA on Friday, December 11 at noon. A luncheon will follow.
